ViroiDoc brings viroid research to new audiences

This autumn, ViroiDoc introduced viroid research to diverse audiences in Cambridge and Heidelberg through science festivals and public engagement activities.

Communicating complex research beyond the scientific community is an important part of the ViroiDoc project and the broader goals of the MSCA Doctoral Networks programme.

In September and October 2026, Veli Vural Uslu (UREG) presented viroid research at two public outreach engagement events that showcased innovative approaches to science communication.

At ScienceCOM in Cambridge, UK (9 Oct), he took part in a unique science communication competition-comedy format in which researchers have just seven minutes to explain their work to a non-specialist audience. Unlike traditional science slams, the focus is not on the speakers but on the audience: participants are encouraged to ask thought-provoking questions, with the most insightful contributions receiving recognition. The format creates a dynamic dialogue between researchers and the public, fostering curiosity and critical thinking.

During the event, Veli invited the audience to reflect on a fundamental biological question: Are viroids alive? The lively discussion highlighted both the remarkable properties of viroids and the value of public engagement in scientific debate.

Earlier, at Science Eggsplained in Heidelberg, Germany (12 Sept), Veli demonstrated how creativity, humour and storytelling can make complex biological concepts accessible to wider audiences. Using a humorous “toilet paper and the cat” demonstration, he explained the rolling-circle replication mechanism of viroids in an engaging and memorable way.

These activities demonstrate how the MSCA Doctoral Networks programme encourages researchers to engage with society, communicate complex scientific concepts, and make research accessible beyond academia.
