A global research journey: Linh's science, growth and finding a second home in Valencia

To mark the 30th anniversary of MSCA, ViroiDoc invites its doctoral candidates to share their mobility experiences in a blog series in 2026.

My interest in plant science began with a curiosity about how tiny pathogens as viroids can have such a significant impact on agriculture. Over time, this interest led me toward molecular biology, plant pathology, and sustainable agriculture, eventually bringing me to the ViroiDoc network as DC5.

When I discovered the ViroiDoc PhD position, I was immediately excited by the opportunity to work on viroid detection using CRISPR-Cas13 technology. My research focuses on developing rapid and sensitive diagnostic tools for plant pathogens, particularly in tomato plants. What motivates me most is the possibility that this work could contribute to more sustainable plant disease management in the future.

Research has taught me that science is a process of patience, problem-solving, and continuous learning. Behind every successful experiment are many optimizations and unexpected challenges, but these experiences have helped me grow both scientifically and personally.

Beyond the laboratory, living abroad has been one of the most valuable parts of this journey. Adapting to new environments and working in an international research network allowed me to become more independent and confident.

One place that became especially meaningful to me is Valencia, Spain. Returning to Valencia always makes me feel happy and motivated. I fell in love with the city’s atmosphere, sunlight, culture, and balance between daily life and research. Spending time there has become an important and memorable part of my PhD experience.

Being part of ViroiDoc has shown me that science is not only about experiments and results, but also about collaboration, cultural exchange, and personal growth. I look forward to continuing this journey and contributing to research that supports sustainable agriculture and plant health.

Linh Thi Thuy Le is an MSCA fellow within the ViroiDoc Network. Linh is working on an individual research project entitled “Point-of-care viroid diagnosis based on CRISPR-Cas technologies” at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), while also pursuing her PhD at the Valencia Polytechnic University (UPV)). Linh´s supervisor is José-Antonio Daròs (CSIC).
